Erlach Castle, Medieval castle in Erlach, Switzerland
Erlach Castle is a fortified complex in Erlach's old town on the shore of Lake Biel, with multiple wings arranged around a central courtyard. A distinctive western tower marks its skyline, while the facades show building styles ranging from medieval times to later centuries.
The castle was founded around 1090 to 1100 by Bishop Burkart von Fenis and initially served as a center of ecclesiastical administration in the region. Its role as a power base shaped the development of Erlach over the following centuries.
The von Erlach family, who took their name from the castle, produced several notable leaders including Rudolf von Erlach, commander at the Battle of Laupen.
The castle currently serves as an educational institution located at Altstadt 28 in Erlach. Visitors should know that the complex is privately used and access may be limited.
Between 1954 and 1997 the complex underwent extensive renovation that carefully preserved its form while adapting interior spaces for modern educational use. These restoration campaigns maintained the distinctive structure while making the building functional for contemporary needs.
