Hindelbank Castle, Baroque castle in Hindelbank, Switzerland.
Hindelbank Castle is a baroque castle in the municipality of Hindelbank with two stories and a steeply pitched hipped roof. The complex features a north-facing three-sided courtyard and displays seven symmetrically arranged windows and doors along each main facade.
The castle was built between 1720 and 1725 for Schultheiss Hieronymus von Erlach, with French architect Joseph Abeille designing the plans. The Canton of Bern acquired the property in 1866 and converted it to a women's correctional facility in 1896.
The castle displays the balanced symmetry typical of baroque design, with its evenly spaced windows and doors creating a sense of careful proportion. This orderly arrangement shapes how visitors experience the building's exterior.
The castle is located in the municipality of Hindelbank and now serves as the administrative center for Switzerland's only women's correctional facility. Visitors should be aware that the grounds are an active institutional facility and may not be freely accessible.
The building was designed following the model of Thunstetten Castle, which served as an architectural reference. This connection shows how local architects adapted their models from other regional examples.
