Wichenstein Castle

Wichenstein Castle is a cave castle built directly into a natural rock face in the mountainside. The four-story front wall stands before the opening, and the hollow space behind it runs deep into the interior of the mountain.

Knights of the Wichenstein family used this structure in the 13th century as a fortified residence, integrating the natural cave into their castle design. This unusual building method turned the existing rock formation into the core of their stronghold.

The castle's name reflects its former inhabitants and shows how people merged nature with construction at this site. The cave itself became part of their living space, something visitors sense immediately upon entering.

Access is via steep stairs from the Wichenstein pond parking area, and sturdy footwear is needed due to the risk of falling rocks. It is wise to move carefully and watch your footing on uneven surfaces, especially when wet.

In local stories, black dogs are described as guardians of hidden treasure protected by a mysterious toad-like creature. These old tales were part of the region's folklore for generations.
