Hotel complex Sonnenberg, Class B cultural heritage hotel in Seelisberg, Switzerland
The Hotel complex Sonnenberg is a hotel building in Seelisberg, a small village in the canton of Uri in Switzerland, set on raised ground above Lake Uri. The structure has multiple floors, a steep roof, and shows the solid construction style common to this part of the Alps.
The complex was built in the late 19th century as a hotel, at a time when Seelisberg was popular with wealthy visitors from across Europe. In 1972 the Maharishi movement bought the property and ran it as an international center for several decades.
The name Sonnenberg refers to the sunny hillside where the building stands, overlooking Lake Uri. Today the property is listed as a regional heritage site, which means its exterior and overall structure are protected from major changes.
The building is on Dorfstrasse in Seelisberg and can be reached by post bus or private car. From the bus stop the site is walkable, though the path goes gently uphill.
Seelisberg was the site of the Maharishi movement's first World Peace Assembly in 1975, and the Sonnenberg served as a key base for that gathering. Participants from dozens of countries came to this small mountain village, which normally has only a few hundred residents.
