Renshou Giant Buddha, Buddhist stone monument in Renshou County, China
The Renshou Giant Buddha is a stone statue carved into a cliff face as part of the Niujiaozhai grottoes complex in Sichuan Province. The site spans across the rock wall with numerous smaller religious chambers surrounding the main figure.
Carving of this monumental stone Buddha started in 707 and continued over several centuries. This extended creation period reflects the site's ongoing importance across different historical eras.
The site holds more than 100 religious shrines representing different spiritual traditions. Visitors can still observe today how these varied beliefs coexist within the carved spaces.
The monument sits south of Chengdu and is open to visitors at no cost. It helps to allow extra time for exploring the various shrines and chambers since they are spread across the rock face.
The complex received official national protection status in 2006, making it one of the country's formally recognized cultural treasures. This official recognition highlights the achievement of its architectural work.
