Cangyuan Rock Paintings

Red ochre paintings spread across eleven locations on grey limestone surfaces showcase human figures, animals, and geometric patterns at 1,500 meters elevation.

The rock paintings in Cangyuan County date back over 3,500 years to the late Neolithic Age, representing some of the earliest artistic expressions in China.

Eight hundred distinct drawings depict hunting scenes, herding activities, warfare episodes, village life, and religious ceremonies of early inhabitants in Yunnan province.

The paintings remain free to visit throughout the year, though visibility varies with weather conditions, particularly during the rainy season from May to October.

The natural pigments used in the paintings display different color variations throughout the day, shifting from red in morning to lighter tones at noon and purple by evening.
