Kašna s Herkulem, Renaissance and Baroque fountain in Cheb, Czech Republic
Kašna s Herkulem is a Renaissance and Baroque fountain located in King George of Poděbrady Square in Cheb. The monument consists of a polygonal stone basin with a central column topped by a Hercules statue holding a club.
The square had an original wooden fountain starting in 1350, which was replaced with a stone basin in 1606. The current Hercules statue was added in 1738 by Peter Anton Felsner.
The fountain's name comes from the mythological hero Hercules, whose figure displays local artistic traditions through its craftsmanship. The polygonal stone basin and carved decorative details show the skill that artisans brought to public spaces in the region.
The fountain sits in the center of the square, making it easy to locate and approach from any direction. You can view it clearly from all sides of the plaza without obstacles.
The Hercules statue carries a shield displaying the coat of arms of Cheb, emphasizing its connection to the city. Surprisingly, an identical Hercules sculpture by the same artist also stands in the staircase of the nearby art gallery.
