Berlin Brandenburg Airport, Commercial airport in Schönefeld, Germany.
Berlin Brandenburg Airport is the main gateway to the capital, located southeast of the city center. The structure rises across eight floors with check-in desks, security checkpoints, and waiting areas that converge into a central terminal building.
Construction started in 2006 with an opening planned for five years later, but delays and technical problems pushed the inauguration back to October 2020. The extended timeline made the project one of the most discussed infrastructure efforts in Germany.
Travelers from around the world use the terminal as a hub between Eastern and Western Europe. The waiting areas are filled with local cafés and bakeries where people can buy fresh pretzels and coffee.
The terminal has its own railway station with direct connections to Berlin Central Station. Express trains cover the distance in roughly half an hour.
The airport was built on previously undeveloped land and replaced three former Berlin airports: Tempelhof, Schönefeld, and Tegel. It carries the name of Willy Brandt, who served as mayor and chancellor and played a role in German reunification.
