Burg

Burg sits atop Bamberg's highest hill and combines a medieval tower with solid fortification walls that protected the site. The layout clearly shows the design of a medieval stronghold with its characteristic defensive features and living quarters.

The site first appears in written records in the early 12th century as a defensive structure. It later became a preferred residence for Bamberg's prince-bishops.

The site takes its name from the princes who made it their home, and visitors can explore the historic restaurant that attracted notable writers of past centuries. The buildings themselves reveal how the region's rulers lived and worked.

The climb to the site follows forest trails from the town center and requires moderate fitness. It is wise to wear sturdy shoes and exercise caution during wet or icy conditions.

From 1952 to 1982, a brown bear named Poldi lived at the site within the fortification enclosures as a local attraction. A taxidermied specimen still reminds visitors of this unusual chapter in the castle's past.
