Burg, Hill castle in Bamberg, Germany
The Altenburg Castle stands on the highest of Bamberg's seven hills, featuring a 33-meter medieval tower and extensive defensive walls.
The first documented mention of Altenburg dates to 1109, when it functioned as a refuge structure before becoming a residence for Bamberg's bishops.
The castle maintains a restaurant in the former palace building named Hoffmannsklause, commemorating writer E.T.A. Hoffmann's 1812 residence in the tower.
Visitors can reach the castle through a 2.5-kilometer hiking trail from Bamberg's center, ascending 140 meters through forest paths.
From 1952 to 1982, the castle maintained a brown bear named Poldi in its defensive enclosure, now commemorated by a taxidermied display.
