Ahrensburg Castle, Renaissance castle in Ahrensburg, Germany.
Ahrensburg Castle is a brick Renaissance building that sits on an artificial island in the middle of a moat. The structure features corner towers at each end and appears white against the surrounding water and green landscape.
The castle was built starting in 1585 by Peter Rantzau on the site of a 13th-century fortified structure. A major renovation occurred in 1759 when new ownership brought extensive interior changes that completely reshaped the building's character.
The castle takes its name from the surrounding area, which evolved from earlier defensive structures into a residential settlement. Walking through the rooms, you see how people shaped the interior to reflect changing tastes across different centuries.
Visits are limited to specific days of the week, so planning ahead is important for your trip. Guided tours are available and help you understand the building's layout and history, while cultural events happen regularly throughout the year.
Much of the furniture inside comes from the late-Baroque renovation period and remains in place today, giving the rooms their current appearance. These pieces offer a window into how wealthy residents furnished their homes during that era.
