Rickmer Rickmers, Museum ship in Hamburg-Mitte, Germany
The Rickmer Rickmers is a three-masted sailing ship 97 meters long, now moored as a museum ship in Hamburg's harbor. Multiple decks contain exhibits that show visitors the history of seafaring, merchant trade, and how ships were built and operated.
Built in 1896, the ship started as a merchant vessel carrying cargo around the world. It later served the Portuguese Navy as a training ship before eventually being brought to Hamburg and converted into a museum.
The ship's name honors its builder, and aboard visitors can experience how sailors lived and worked in earlier times. The exhibits show the daily routines and close quarters that seafarers endured during long voyages.
The ship sits right at the harbor and is easily reached on foot from the city center; decks are connected by stairs and narrow passages. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for tight spaces, especially in the lower areas and crew quarters.
The ship is still used for maritime events where sailors demonstrate traditional sailing techniques using its three original masts. This active use makes it more than just a static museum – it is a living example of seafaring craftsmanship.
