Sophienkirche, Baroque church in Berlin-Mitte, Germany

Sophienkirche is a baroque building with a tall, slender tower that defines the skyline of Berlin-Mitte. The interior and exterior facade display typical features of 18th-century Protestant church architecture with clear and balanced proportions.

The church was completed in 1712 as the first religious building in the Spandauer Vorstadt quarter and was named after the queen who commissioned it. In the late 1800s, the structure received an expansion that respected its original baroque style.

The church is named after the queen who commissioned it and marks the founding of the Spandauer Vorstadt neighborhood. Today it remains a gathering place for the Protestant congregation and shapes the character of this historic quarter.

The grounds include a separate cemetery with old gravestones from the 1700s that you can walk through and explore. The location is easily accessible on foot and makes a natural stopping point while wandering through the Mitte neighborhood.

The tower was built between 1729 and 1735 during the early construction phase and rises above the church hall itself. This unusual building sequence makes the tower the most distinctive feature and a landmark visible across Berlin's skyline.
