Alfeld, Hanseatic city in Hildesheim district, Germany
The city of Alfeld sits along the Leine River in Lower Saxony, stretching over 72 square kilometers with half-timbered buildings throughout its center.
Established before 1214 under the name Alvelde, the settlement joined the Saxon League of Towns in 1426 and became part of the Hanseatic League.
The Fagus Factory, designed in 1911 by Walter Gropius, stands as an early example of modernist industrial architecture in Germany.
The SAPPI paper factory remains the largest employer in Alfeld, while the town maintains direct transport connections to Hannover and Hildesheim.
Alfeld houses an octagonal tower at its 1586 town hall, complemented by the medieval Fillerturm watchtower overlooking the city center.
