Bethanienkirche

Bethanienkirche, Lutheran church in Schleußig district, Leipzig, Germany.

The Bethanienkirche is a modern church building in the Schleußig district featuring a 38.5-meter concrete tower and two entrance arcades. Inside, an elevated central nave with 14 windows forms the heart of the space, complemented by two multi-use congregation halls that can function as a single room with seating, a stage, and a projection area.

Architect Carl William Zweck designed and built this church between 1931 and 1933 as an expression of modern architectural principles. The building merges contemporary construction techniques with traditional church design elements.

The church hosts an active Lutheran congregation that gathers for services, concerts, and community events throughout the year. It remains a place where people experience faith within a modern urban setting.

The building is accessible and offers flexible interior spaces suitable for different types of gatherings and events. Natural light from the many windows illuminates the rooms, and the wooden seating can be arranged or removed to adapt the space as needed.

The tower draws design inspiration from medieval fortified churches in Thuringia, connecting to the Lutheran hymn 'A Mighty Fortress is Our God'. This reference shows how the architect wove historical faith and architectural tradition into a contemporary form.
