Biosphärenreservat Flusslandschaft Elbe – Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve along Elbe River in northern Germany.
The Biosphere Reserve Elbe River Landscape is a protected area between Boizenburg and Dömitz featuring floodplain forests, wetlands, and inland sand dunes along the Elbe system. These diverse habitats form an interconnected ecosystem that supports a wide range of plants and animals.
The area was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1997, beginning systematic protection of the river landscape. This recognition launched ongoing efforts to safeguard the natural ecosystems of the Elbe floodplain.
Local communities maintain fishing traditions and farming practices that coexist with conservation efforts in this river landscape. People here view their region as a working environment where human activity and nature support each other.
The reserve is accessible by train from Boizenburg or Brahlstorf, while drivers can use highways A24 and B5 to reach the area. Spring and autumn offer the best visiting conditions when migratory birds pass through the region.
The reserve contains some of northern Germany's highest inland dunes, formed during the last ice age and supporting specialized plant communities adapted to sandy soils. These unusual landforms make this reserve a rare example of post-glacial river landscape diversity.
