Das Schiff, Theatre in Hamburg-Altstadt, Germany.
Das Schiff is a theatre in the Hamburg-Mitte district, permanently housed inside a ship moored in the harbour area. The hull of a real vessel serves as the building itself, containing both the stage and the seating area.
The theatre opened in 1975 after an old vessel built in 1912 was converted into a performance venue. The hull has been in continuous use as an active stage ever since, without any long interruption.
Das Schiff sits on the Nikolaifleet canal in the heart of Hamburg, a waterway once used for city trade. The surrounding old warehouses and bridges give it a setting that no conventional theatre building can offer.
The venue sits in Hamburg's central harbour area and is easy to reach by public transport. Access is via a gangway, so it is worth checking ahead if you visit during periods of high water, when boarding conditions may change.
Although the vessel spends most of its time moored, it is still technically seaworthy and capable of moving under its own power. This makes it one of the very few theatre spaces in Europe that could, in theory, sail away.
