Museum Georg Schäfer displays German paintings and drawings spanning 1760 to 1930, featuring works by masters like Caspar David Friedrich and Carl Spitzweg. The collection comprises approximately 950 paintings that document the full range of German artistic development during this era.

Industrialist Georg Schäfer began assembling his art collection during the 1950s, purchasing works from dealers across Munich and Europe. The collection eventually became public and now stands as one of Germany's most important privately-formed assemblies of German paintings.

The collection reflects the artistic movements of 19th-century Germany. Visitors can trace how painting evolved from Romantic ideals toward more modern approaches through the works displayed here.

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, with Mondays closed. It is best to check current conditions before visiting, as access arrangements and visiting rules may change seasonally.

It holds the world's largest collection of Carl Spitzweg works, with 160 paintings and 110 drawings by the artist. This extraordinary concentration makes it a primary destination for understanding this painter's full artistic range.
