Erdfunksendestelle Usingen, Satellite communication facility in Usingen, Germany
The Usingen Earth Station is a satellite communication ground facility located in the city of Usingen, Germany. The site spans 140 hectares and contains more than 135 antennas of varying sizes that transmit and receive data signals to and from satellites.
The facility was established in 1955 by Deutsche Bundespost as a shortwave radio station. During the 1970s, it was transformed into a modern satellite communication center to support international data transmission.
This facility plays a vital role in connecting Europe and North Africa through telecommunications, making it a backbone for broadcasting services across the region. Visitors can see how advanced technology works silently behind everyday communications that people rely on.
The facility operates around the clock and is surrounded by fenced green areas where sheep graze to manage vegetation. Note that this is an active communication installation and is typically not open to the public.
The grounds use sheep instead of conventional mowing equipment to maintain the grass between the large antennas while reducing emissions. Additionally, solar panels on the site generate 6.2 megawatts of power, producing enough electricity for roughly 1700 households.
