Schloss Altenmuhr

Schloss Altenmuhr is a medieval water castle in Muhr am See featuring a five-story stone tower and thick defensive walls visible from the exterior. The structure rests on a water-supported foundation and displays the fortified architecture typical of its period.

This castle originated in the 12th century when the Lords of Muhr built it as a fortification. Over the centuries it changed ownership multiple times and underwent several renovations before acquiring its present form during the 19th century.

The west wing displays stucco ceilings crafted by a master artisan from Nuremberg that reflect regional craftsmanship of the early 17th century. These rooms tell a story about the artistic taste and skill of that era.

The castle exterior is accessible to visitors for viewing from the outside, though the interior remains private property not open to the public. Checking in advance about any special tour days helps you plan your visit appropriately.

The east wing houses a rare monochrome wall painting from the early 19th century that was carefully preserved during restoration work in the early 2000s. This remarkable detail often escapes visitors who view the castle from the outside.
