Castrum Sablonetum

Castrum Sablonetum is a Roman military fort near Ellingen in Bavaria, with remains consisting primarily of stone foundations and wall traces. The site displays the typical rectangular layout of a Roman fort, with visible sections of the defensive perimeter still discernible in the landscape.

The fort was built during Roman expansion to secure the empire's borders along the Raetian Limes frontier. It served as part of the broader military infrastructure that Rome maintained to protect its territorial interests in this part of Bavaria.

The name Sablonetum reflects how Romans identified their military posts, and the site demonstrates the strategic role such forts played in administering conquered territories. Walking through the remains helps visitors understand how the army maintained control over this border region.

The site is accessible at any time from outside and is located about 700 meters east of Ellingen's center. The terrain is open for walking, though sturdy footwear is recommended as the ground can be uneven.

The location sits at about 454 meters elevation, which gave Roman soldiers excellent visibility across the surrounding landscape for early threat detection. This geographic advantage made the site particularly valuable for monitoring the frontier.
