Wismut Objekt 03, Mining division in Schneeberg, Germany
Wismut Objekt 03 is an abandoned mining division in Schneeberg with an underground network of two main tunnels, the Fürstenstolln and Marx-Semler-Stolln, along with several shafts. The facility spans a large area and shows the technical infrastructure that was needed for mining at such depths.
Mining activity in this area began as early as the 14th century with extraction of iron ore, tin, copper, and bismuth, before uranium deposits were discovered later. After 1946 the site operated under Soviet administration and extracted uranium until it was closed.
The name Schneeberg reflects the mining heritage of this area, and visitors can still see traces of this past in the landscape and structures surrounding the abandoned shafts today.
The site is partially accessible to visitors, but it is important to get information about any restrictions beforehand. Sturdy shoes and caution are needed since it is a former mining area with uneven ground.
This place became world famous after Marie Curie's discovery of radioactivity, which led to intense uranium prospecting in the area. The combination of old mining traditions and later uranium extraction makes it an example of how scientific breakthroughs became linked to local economic history.
