Höhenburg

Höhenburg is a castle ruin perched at 520 meters elevation with remains of medieval fortifications and a prominent residential tower near the entrance. The site displays typical features of a medieval hilltop fortress with preserved walls and towers that rise above the surrounding landscape.

First recorded in 1125, the fortress came under the rule of the Bamberg prince-bishops in 1390. Following destructions in 1430 and 1525, it underwent several reconstructions that shaped its appearance across different periods.

The main tower now serves as a gallery displaying works by regional artists within its ancient stone walls. You can see how the fortress has transformed its defensive purpose into a space for contemporary cultural activities.

The castle grounds remain accessible throughout the year with parking available directly at the site. An on-site restaurant allows visitors to rest and makes longer stays more comfortable.

Archaeological evidence shows that people have lived on this hilltop continuously since the Stone Age, centuries before the medieval castle was built. The layers beneath the ruins tell a story of thousands of years of human presence at this location.
