Höhenburg, Castle ruin in Scheßlitz, Germany
The Giechburg stands at 520 meters elevation, featuring remnants of medieval fortifications and a prominent living tower near the entrance point.
First documented in 1125, the castle transferred to the prince-bishops of Bamberg in 1390 and underwent multiple reconstructions after destructions in 1430 and 1525.
The main tower of Giechburg now functions as an exhibition space, displaying regional art collections within its preserved stone walls.
The castle grounds remain open throughout the year, with a restaurant and parking facilities available directly at the fortress location.
Archaeological findings indicate continuous human settlement on this hilltop since Neolithic times, preceding the medieval castle construction by millennia.
