Pfalzgrafenschloss Neumarkt, Castle and architectural heritage monument in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, Germany.
The Pfalzgrafenschloss Neumarkt is a castle with a three-wing layout in late Gothic style and a prominent stair tower on the northeastern corner. The structure displays the characteristic features of this building period and currently houses the district court offices.
The castle was built between 1410 and 1443 as a residence for the Count Palatine. After a fire in 1520, it was reconstructed and modernized under the direction of architect Erhard Reich for Count Palatine Friedrich II.
The castle sits within a complex that includes the Hofkirche and Reitstadel, showing how medieval Bavarian architecture expressed local power and identity. These buildings together shape the character of the plaza and reveal the values of the people who built them.
The castle is located at Residenzplatz 1 and serves as the courthouse for local authorities. Since it has a public function, visitors can view the exterior at any time, but should be aware that interior spaces are not freely accessible.
The castle contains the Mathematikerturm, a tower from the late 15th century that was originally built as an astronomical observatory for the stargazing of Duke Otto II. This tower reveals the scientific interests of the rulers of that time and remains a fascinating example of early scientific infrastructure.
