Gräberfeld Bettelbühl, Celtic burial ground in Herbertingen, Germany.
Gräberfeld Bettelbühl is a Celtic grave field with seven burial mounds located in Herbertingen, Baden-Württemberg. The main mound spans approximately 50 meters across and rises about 3.7 meters above the surrounding ground, with the remaining mounds of varying sizes arranged around this central feature.
The central burial chamber was excavated in 2010, and wooden structures within it were dendrochronologically dated to winter 583/582 BCE. This places the site within the Hallstatt period, when it functioned as a significant cemetery for an elite Celtic community.
The site is named after the historic farmstead on whose land these burials were placed. Visitors can observe how the raised mounds remain prominent features in the local landscape, reflecting the enduring importance of these individuals to their community.
The site is protected as a ground monument and can be viewed from the surrounding area, with the mounds easily accessible from local walking and field paths. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the ground can be soft or uneven depending on the season.
A single burial chamber held over 40 golden ornaments and approximately 100 amber objects, indicating the person buried there held very high social rank. Such wealth was extraordinary for the time and reveals the considerable prosperity of this Celtic community.
