Haus Lochfeld, Conservation center in Mandelbachtal, Germany
Haus Lochfeld is a conservation center in Mandelbachtal located at 320 meters (1,050 feet) elevation between Ormesheimer Berg and Heidenkopf within the Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve. The site includes an ecological vineyard, heritage plants, and operates its own water supply and renewable energy systems.
Originally a farmhouse built around 1900, the site was converted into a cultural landscape center in 1999 with European Union support. This transformation marked the shift from agricultural production to environmental education and conservation work.
Visitors can see an ecological vineyard with heritage grape varieties and mulberry trees that have grown here since Roman times, reflecting the region's agricultural roots. These plants show how this landscape has been shaped by farming across centuries.
The site is accessible via hiking trails through the Biosphere Reserve and is best visited during the growing season when the vineyard and gardens are active. Allow time to explore the different areas and take in the surrounding landscape at a relaxed pace.
The site is home to one of the oldest medlar trees in Saarland, a botanical rarity of the region. The center also operates a complete water management system including a well, rainwater cistern, and treatment facility.
