Haus Heeren

Haus Heeren is a water castle in Kamen surrounded by moats that display medieval defense techniques. The complex features main buildings with walls that use water as a natural defensive line.

The castle began in the Middle Ages as a fortified residence for a noble family. Over time, the moats were also used for fish farming and watering the surrounding fields.

The structure shows the style of Westphalian noble residences that wealthy families favored for their homes. You can still see today how the water surrounding the buildings kept inhabitants separated and safe from the outside.

The site is best explored on foot, with the outer areas of the moats clearly visible. Wear appropriate footwear, as the ground varies depending on the season.

Several generations of the owning family shaped the structure, and traces of their personal adaptations are visible in different building styles. These layered changes make the castle an example of how living concepts evolved over centuries.
