Karfreit-Kaserne, Military barracks in Brannenburg, Germany.
Karfreit-Kaserne is a former military compound in Brannenburg, Bavaria, made up of several buildings that once served as housing, administrative, and operational facilities. The site sits at the edge of town and only a portion of the original structures still stand today.
The facility was built in 1935 and 1936 and served mainly as a training base for mountain infantry during the Second World War. After the war it continued to function as a military site until it finally closed in 2010.
The barracks were part of daily life in Brannenburg for decades, with many locals working on the grounds or having family members stationed there. This closeness between military and civilian life left a lasting mark on the town.
Most of the buildings have been torn down, so there is little to see on the grounds today and access is limited. Those who want to look at what remains can do so from outside, ideally during daylight hours.
A mountain hut in the Wendelstein area was officially part of the compound and continued to serve a military purpose even after the main site closed. This remote outpost shows how far the installation reached beyond its central grounds.
