Klosterkirche St. Matthias in Regensburg, Religious heritage site in Regensburg, Germany

Klosterkirche St. Matthias in Regensburg is a church building with stone walls and decorated vaults that houses a high altar featuring a painting of the calling of Saint Matthias. The interior shows solid architectural structures designed for religious gatherings.

The church was founded in 1613 at the request of Emperor Matthias and received its consecration in 1615. The founding was part of efforts to promote religious harmony in the city during that period.

The church displays a series of Stations of the Cross from the late 19th century sourced from the diocese art collection. These religious artworks tell the story of Christ's Passion through their images and remain visible to visitors today.

A Romanian Orthodox community uses the church regularly for services after extensive renovations were completed and the building reopened in October 2023. Visitors should check current opening hours since the church remains an active place of worship.

This is the only church in the Diocese of Regensburg dedicated to Saint Matthias, the apostle chosen to replace Judas Iscariot. This rare dedication makes the church particularly special among religious buildings in the region.
