Kasberger Linde, Natural monument and architectural heritage lime tree in Gräfenberg, Germany
The Kasberger Linde is an old lime tree with a massive trunk about 8 meters around, standing at 510 meters elevation near historic roads. The tree grows in a gently rolling landscape surrounded by pastures and smaller wooded areas.
The tree is between 600 and 1000 years old and has survived many changes over the centuries. Hungarian troops camped beneath it in the 1790s, and the area later experienced military conflict during the Napoleonic Wars.
For centuries, people gathered under the tree's branches for meetings and social gatherings. Its location made it a natural gathering place where locals and travelers would naturally stop and come together.
The tree grows on slightly elevated terrain and is accessible by simple footpaths. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the ground conditions vary depending on weather and the season.
The trunk has visibly shrunk and become noticeably thinner, and the wood shows natural hollowing. These changes reveal how the ancient tree continues to adapt and transform with age.
