Altenberger Markuskapelle, Medieval chapel in Odenthal, Germany.
The Altenberger Markuskapelle is a chapel located in Odenthal and stands between Altenberg Court and Kitchen Court. The building features a six-pass window on its northern wall and pointed arch windows in the polygon, displaying Gothic architectural style.
The chapel was built around 1220 on older foundations discovered during excavations in 1895. Three sarcophagi made of red sandstone and tuff masonry once rested inside, testifying to its importance as a burial site.
The chapel is named after Saint Mark and houses an early Gothic mural on its western wall depicting the coronation of Mary. The interior paintings follow historical traces uncovered during restoration work and show religious scenes from different periods.
The chapel generally follows the opening hours of Altenberg Cathedral, though it remains temporarily closed for repairs following weather damage. Visitors should check ahead before planning a visit, as access and viewing opportunities may be limited during this period.
In 1988, artist Walter Jansen created a sculpture of Saint Mark using nine different types of wood, placed in a niche of the western wall. This work combines modern artistic craftsmanship with the medieval setting of the chapel.
