St. Nikolai, Kiel

St. Nikolai stands as a Gothic hall structure with three naves, featuring concrete pillars and a steel-reinforced roof from its 1950s reconstruction period.

The church's initial construction began in 1242 under Adolf IV of Schauenburg, followed by multiple reconstructions after lightning damage in 1486 and wartime destruction in 1944.

The medieval bronze baptismal font from 1344, the altar from 1460, and the Barlach sculpture represent different periods of northern German religious art.

St. Nikolai maintains regular Protestant services and contains the largest bell system in Kiel, with the heaviest bell in Schleswig-Holstein region.

The Pommernkapelle section displays mosaics depicting the province of Pomerania, highlighting historical connections between Kiel and Szczecin.
