St. Nikolai, Kiel, Protestant church in Alter Markt, Kiel, Germany
St. Nikolai is a Gothic hall church with three naves that was rebuilt after wartime destruction and features reinforced concrete pillars and a steel-reinforced roof. It stands at the Alter Markt and holds the largest bell system in Kiel.
Construction began in 1242 under Adolf IV of Schauenburg and the building underwent several rebuildings after lightning damage in 1486 and destruction during World War II. Reconstruction in the 1950s gave it its modern form.
The church displays artworks spanning several centuries: a bronze baptismal font from 1344, an altar from 1460, and a Barlach sculpture. These objects reflect the artistic development of north German religious tradition.
Visitors can locate the church easily at Alter Markt, a central square in the old town, and attend regular Protestant services. The bell system is impressive and audible when in use.
The Pommernkapelle features mosaics depicting the historical region of Pomerania and showing the connection between Kiel and Szczecin. This area serves as a reminder of the city's deep ties to Central Europe.
