Nikolaiturm, Medieval defense tower in Görlitz, Germany.
The Nikolaiturm rises above Görlitz's old town as a square brick structure topped with a baroque cupola. The tower commands views across the rooftops and streets of the historic center below.
The tower was built around 1260 as a fortification between two city districts and served defensive purposes until the 1800s. A fire in 1717 destroyed its original peak, after which the baroque cupola was added and remains today.
The tower takes its name from Saint Nicholas and has shaped the old town's appearance for centuries. Visitors can see how this structure remains integral to Görlitz's identity as a medieval stronghold along the city's eastern edge.
The tower is open to visitors, and guided tours through its interior levels are regularly offered by local heritage organizations. It is helpful to check opening times beforehand, as these may vary with the season.
Inside the tower, a historical apartment is preserved across two upper floors, furnished with objects and furniture from different time periods. These rooms show how people lived in and around this structure across the centuries.
