Marienkirche, Gothic church in Barth, Germany
Marienkirche is a three-nave hall church made of brick with a rectangular choir and twelve buttresses along the outer walls. The building shows the typical style of northern German brick Gothic, with its structure organized to create a feeling of openness inside.
Construction of the church began around 1300, with the eastern choir being the oldest part of the building. The structure was expanded and modified over several centuries as the community grew and needs changed.
The church houses a rare bronze baptismal font from the 14th century, the only surviving example of its kind in the entire region. This artwork shows how important the place was as a center of religious practice across many generations.
The church is located at Papenstraße 7 and can be visited during regular services. The interior is best experienced on Sundays or during the organ concerts held from June through September.
The church library holds a rare Bible printed in Low German in 1588 right in Barth itself. This book is a precious record of the town's printing history and its importance as a cultural center.
