Nikolaikirche

Nikolaikirche is a Gothic church ruin in Bautzen with partially preserved walls and structural elements that show medieval building techniques. The remains reveal the craftsmanship from five centuries ago.

Construction began in 1450 on land that had been used since the 15th century. After a major fire in 1634, the building was never rebuilt and remained incomplete.

The church served as a place of worship for the Catholic Sorbian community after the religious shift in the city. Visitors can sense how it functioned as a gathering space for this minority population.

The ruin is located at Nicolaipforte 1a and can be accessed from three different sides. Walking access is straightforward and offers multiple viewing angles of the structure.

What sets this ruin apart is that it was intentionally left unrebuilt after the 1634 fire, even though reconstruction plans existed. This makes it a rare example of an accepted ruin within the city.
