St. Joseph is a Catholic church in Bonn with brick walls and Romanesque elements, featuring a simple, orderly appearance. A large rose window above the organ gallery marks the facade, while the interior is arranged with pews and an altar for services.
The building was constructed between 1930 and 1931 by architects from Cologne and shaped the streetscape for years. World War II destroyed the church in 1944 through bombing, but it was rebuilt following the original plans.
The stained glass windows display depictions of saints designed by Professor Wilhelm Rupprecht, filling the interior with colored light as you move through the church. These artworks shape the visual character of the space and draw your eye throughout.
You can enter the church from Tuesday through Sunday, with extended opening hours from April to September. Wheelchair access is available throughout the building, so all areas are easily reachable.
The mosaic work behind the altar was created by Professor Ludwig Schaffrath and captures light in a particular way. The basement crypt was fundamentally renewed in the 1990s, which gave the space beneath the church new purpose.
