Der Sport, glass mosaic by Eduard Bargheer in Hannover, Germany
Der Sport is a large-scale art mosaic located in front of the Heinz-von-Heiden-Arena in Hannover, composed of thousands of small colored stones and measuring about 200 square meters. The work hangs on the south side of the entrance area and displays abstract representations of athletes and movement in bold colors.
The mosaic was created between 1962 and 1963 by artist Eduard Bargheer and originally hung on the exterior wall of a gymnasium belonging to the former Niedersachsen Stadium. After the stadium was renovated into today's HDI-Arena, the artwork was relocated to its current position at the south entrance.
The mosaic expresses athletic movement through vibrant colors and shapes that convey strength and energy. It stands as public art at the stadium's entrance, connecting the art world with the city's sporting life.
The mosaic is freely accessible from the plaza in front of the stadium entrance and can be viewed at any time without entering the building. The best viewing angle is from the opposite side of the plaza, from which the entire surface of the artwork is clearly visible.
The mosaic is among the largest monumental art mosaics in Germany and was partially dismantled during the stadium renovation and carefully reassembled to be installed at its new location. This elaborate restoration work demonstrates the significance of the artwork and the city's commitment to preserving it for future generations.
