Wolletzsee, Lake in Brandenburg, Germany
Wolletzsee is a long, narrow lake in northeastern Brandenburg, near the town of Angermünde. It runs roughly east to west for about 5 miles (8 km) in total length, is bordered by forest on all sides, and has three small islands, the largest of which rises steeply from the water.
The village of Wolletz on the northern shore was first recorded in 1313, and Slavic communities used the land around the lake long before that. In the 19th century, a hunting lodge was built on a slope above the lake by nobility, and the estate later passed through military hands and East German state use before becoming a heart recovery clinic after reunification.
The lake is easiest to reach from Angermünde, where a local bus runs directly to the shore. The beach area with its sand, playground, and boat rental is generally open from mid-May through early September.
The nearby Grumsin forest has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011 and contains trees over a hundred years old. The lake also sits within a biosphere reserve, and a marked trail of around 10 miles (16 km) circles it through the surrounding woods past the small islands.
