DolWin1, High-voltage direct current power line in Lower Saxony, Germany
DolWin1 is a high-voltage direct current power line that connects offshore wind farms in the North Sea to mainland Germany. The system uses submarine cables and underground pathways spanning approximately 165 kilometers in total distance.
The project started in 2010 with planning and implementation of offshore infrastructure. The converter platform was installed in 2013, and the complete system became operational in 2015.
The installation represents Germany's shift toward renewable energy and shows how modern technology brings wind power from the sea to land. It is part of a broader movement to integrate wind and water resources into the power grid.
The site is located on the open sea within Germany's exclusive economic zone and is not directly accessible to visitors. The system is monitored and maintained by specialists who reach it by ship or helicopter.
The converter station sits on a 12,000-tonne platform anchored directly in the North Sea. This structure withstands storms and extreme waves that regularly batter the sea.
