Geisloch bei Münzinghof, Natural karst cave near Münzinghof, Velden, Germany
Geisloch bei Münzinghof is a natural cave system near Velden spanning about 145 meters with multiple chambers shaped by limestone dissolution. The cave contains small underground lakes and varied sections with different geological features.
The cave system was first recorded in 1534 as Geisselloh in historical documents. Neolithic archaeological finds from within the cave suggest that people explored and used this space thousands of years before.
The name refers to its historical use as a clay source. Visitors can observe today how the stone walls show marks from centuries of extraction work.
Entry requires descending through a sinkhole about 12 meters deep and navigating several narrow passages. Bring a flashlight and wear sturdy shoes, as the ground can be wet and slippery throughout.
Two lakes within the cave have water levels that rise and fall with the seasons and rainfall, creating an ever-changing landscape as you move through. These subterranean waters add an element of surprise to each visit.
