MEWO Kunsthalle, Contemporary art museum in Memmingen, Germany
MEWO Kunsthalle is an art museum in Memmingen spread across three floors with exhibition spaces arranged around a covered atrium. A building of the original complex serves as the main exhibition hall, providing adequate room for different contemporary shows.
The building functioned as a royal post office starting in 1901 until 1990, then housed a district court through 1996. Its conversion by the Memminger Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft later established it as a public art gallery.
The collection features works from Josef Madlener's assembly of over 800 paintings and 2000 graphic pieces that show artistic directions across different periods. Prints from the Prestel family document printmaking traditions spanning from the 18th to the 20th century.
The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00, with extended hours until 19:00 on Thursdays, and remains closed on Mondays. Plan adequate time to explore all three floors, as the collection is substantial.
The second floor holds a graphics cabinet with an integrated drawer system that displays additional artworks across expanded exhibition surfaces. This approach allows far more graphic works to be shown than would fit on walls alone.
