Sculpture of blue whale jaw, Bronze monument at Vegesack Harbor, Germany
The Sculpture of Blue Whale Jaw is a bronze replica of a whale jawbone standing at Vegesack's harbor front. It sits along the Maritime Mile and displays the scale of these ocean creatures with naturalistic detail.
A real whale jawbone was gifted to the city in 1963 by a Norwegian shipowner. After decades of exposure to the elements, this lasting bronze version was created in 1987 to replace the original.
The sculpture marks a chapter when local whalers traveled to Arctic waters and brought back such remains as proof of their voyages. Today the bronze tells the story of this singular connection between the harbor and the sea.
The monument sits directly on a popular walking path alongside the Weser River and is accessible at any time. Informational panels on site help visitors learn more about the location's history.
The sculpture is one of three whale-themed monuments at this location, including a statue and tail fin. This grouping makes Vegesack an unusual destination for whale imagery in central Europe.
