Christoph 14, Rescue helicopter at Traunstein Hospital, Germany
Christoph 14 is an Airbus H135 rescue helicopter based at Traunstein Hospital, operating with Federal Police pilots and emergency medical personnel from regional institutions. The aircraft meets European safety standards and carries equipment for rescue and medical operations.
The helicopter rescue service started in 1976 with an orange Bölkow Bo 105, which served Southeast Upper Bavaria with emergency operations. The station later received newer aircraft to meet the growing demands of rescue operations in the region.
The name Christoph 14 draws from Saint Christopher, honored across German rescue services as the patron saint of travelers and those in transit. This naming tradition connects daily rescue operations to a religious custom shared by helicopter stations throughout the country.
The helicopter is ready for emergency operations within about 60 kilometers of Traunstein and has a backup aircraft with matching technical capabilities. Keep in mind that operations depend on weather conditions, and flights cannot take place during poor visibility or storms.
The current aircraft is a modern H135 model equipped with specialized hoisting systems and rescue equipment designed for difficult mountain rescues in the surrounding Alpine regions. This equipment makes the station particularly valuable for operations in challenging high-altitude terrain.
