Hinanger Wasserfall

Hinanger Wasserfall, Natural cascade in Sonthofen, Germany.

Hinanger Wasserfall is a natural cascade with multiple steps that spans about 160 meters overall and spreads across roughly 100 meters in width. The water flows over rocky ledges and creates different elevation levels with varying water depths and flow patterns.

The area was shaped during the Ice Age by the Iller-Foreland Glacier, which transported large amounts of gravel and rock from the Alps. These deposits established the foundation on which the current waterfall steps formed.

The site is recognized as a protected geotope and attracts visitors interested in rare plants that grow on the wet rocks. The marshy and damp areas around the falls provide habitat for specialized flora that thrives in few other places.

The site is reached from a roadside parking area via a marked trail, where the walk has a gentle slope and takes about 10 to 15 minutes. The terrain is mostly easy to walk on, but in damper sections the paths can be slippery, particularly after rain.

The water creates calcareous tufa deposits at this location through chemical reactions between the water and rainfall. Specialized plants play an important role in promoting and stabilizing these mineral formations.
