Reste des Kettenstegs, Bridge remnants in Passau, Germany.
The Reste des Kettenstegs is a pair of granite block pylons standing near Bräugasse 13, marking where a historical Danube crossing once existed. The foundations show where this footbridge was anchored between the old town area and the Ilzstadt riverbank.
The Kettensteg was built in 1869 as a suspension footbridge spanning the Danube and connected the old town with Ilzstadt. It was removed in 1910, but left behind the stone anchor points that still mark this former passage today.
The remnants recall a former connection between two neighborhoods that once carried pedestrians across the water. They show how the city linked its riverbanks and shaped daily movement across the river.
The foundation stones are located near the Ilz estuary and are easy to view from the riverbank. You can best reach and observe them from the riverside path or from the adjacent street.
The bridge was constructed with two thick steel cables that were anchored into the rocky heights above the neighboring fortress. These anchor points in the hillside remain visible today and show the engineering skill of that era.
