Kollegienhaus

Kollegienhaus is the main university building in Erlangen, featuring three pavilions with slate mansard roofs constructed from sandstone and brick elements. The structure overlooks the Schlossgarten garden and houses lecture halls and seminar rooms for the humanities, theology, and law departments.

The building was constructed between 1886 and 1889 by architect Friedrich Wilhelm Scharff during a period of university expansion in the German Empire. Its creation reflects the growth and academic prominence that Erlangen achieved during that era.

The building displays the university motto 'Veritati Humanitati Virtuti' on its central pavilion, with allegorical figures representing the four classical faculties. These representations tell of the values that have shaped the university since its founding.

The building is typically only accessible as part of university events, so check in advance if public tours or special occasions are available. It sits centrally in the university quarter and is easily reached by public transportation.

The attic stores academic robes worn during ceremonial occasions and university celebrations. The Senate Hall impresses with intricately crafted wooden panels and a coffered ceiling that preserves late 19th century craftsmanship details.
