Station building at Cham station, Railway station building in Cham, Germany
The railway station at Cham is a three-story building from 1898 featuring corner projections, a hipped roof, and decorative Renaissance Revival framing on its upper levels. The facade displays characteristic architectural details that define the appearance of the surrounding area.
The original station opened in 1861 when the Schwandorf-Furth im Wald railway line began operations, connecting the town to the rail network. The current building was constructed in 1898 to serve the increasing railway traffic.
The station building displays Renaissance Revival ornaments and framing that shape the town's character. It represents Cham's connection to the modern railway era that began in the 1800s.
The building sits in central Cham and is easily accessible on foot from the old town. The station square offers clear orientation and the main entrance is easily visible from the forecourt.
When the railway was built in the 1860s, the medieval Sandtor gate had to be demolished and sections of the northern city moat were filled in. Parts of this old moat were later repurposed as the foundation for the railway tracks.
