Schloss Waldau

Schloss Waldau is a three-story castle in Vohenstrauß with a hipped roof design and a side courtyard wing added during the 18th century. The building combines these historical structures with the older Waldau fortress that once stood on this site.

After the original Waldau fortress decayed in the late 1600s, the new castle was built and integrated elements from the earlier structure. The shift from fortress to castle shows how the region moved from military architecture to a residential estate.

The chapel inside shows religious traditions through two altars given in 1717 by Baron Karl Johann von Rummel and his wife. These spaces reflect the faith and generosity of the family who shaped the castle over many generations.

The castle is located in Vohenstrauß and is accessible from outside to view the architecture and surrounding gardens. The brewery on the grounds continues to operate and contributes to the ongoing use of this historical place.

An English garden surrounds the main building and marks the location where the old Waldau fortress once stood. This garden shows how the owners preserved the history of the place while adapting it for new purposes.
