Burg Dauchstein

Burg Dauchstein is a castle ruin sitting on a rocky plateau above the Neckar River near Binau. The residential tower and sections of the outer wall remain visible today, showing the original layout.

The fortress began around 1150 during Hohenstaufen rule and served to control Neckar traffic. Chains stretched across the river allowed the castle lords to monitor commerce and vessels.

The structure shows features of medieval defensive architecture common to the Neckar valley. Its position above the river reveals how such fortifications controlled commerce and movement.

The ruins sit on private land, so visitors should respect access signs and stay away from residential areas. The rocky location offers views into the Neckar valley but requires careful footing on uneven ground.

The residential tower contained a remarkably advanced waste system with its own toilet area, quite rare for fortifications of that era. Additionally, narrow stairs were carved directly into the outer wall, resembling an emergency escape route.
