Christoph 20 is a rescue helicopter based at Bayreuth Airport that operates an Airbus EC135 for emergency medical transport. The aircraft serves a large region across northeastern Bavaria and neighboring areas of Thuringia.
The rescue helicopter service began operating in November 1981 and has grown into an important part of emergency response in the region. Over the decades, it has responded to thousands of medical emergencies.
The medical team consists of physicians from Klinikum Bayreuth specializing in anesthesia, surgery, and internal medicine working alongside ADAC pilots.
The helicopter operates from sunrise until sunset, with flights beginning no earlier than 7:00 AM. Emergency calls are coordinated through the Bayreuth/Kulmbach dispatch center.
In 2004, this rescue helicopter recorded 1,755 missions, marking it as one of the most frequently deployed emergency aircraft in Germany.
